My name is Qil Jones (they/them). I’m an afrofuturist metalbender & machinewitch from West Philly. That is to say, I cavort with time, dreams, metal and machines...among other things. I started BLACKMARZIAN back in 2017 as a creative medium for adorning Black faces with jewelry that describes how we fluidly inhabit our capacities for liberation. I came into working with metal through studying in free digital spaces; with the help of numerous YouTube videos, I began learning how to operate small-scale machinery inside of my apartment workspace. This has generated possibilities for fabrication that I had only previously dreamed of. Now, with a combination of hand tools, machine power, and a library of Black thought, I find myself more eager than ever to make afrofunctional accessories and objects that conjure consideration of the appearance of Black freedom in relation to time and spatial thresholds.
